Call for nominations for hosting Cities on Volcanoes 11 Conference in 2020

To have a proposal considered, a nomination must have been received by 4 May 2018 

Proposals are to be emailed to the 'Commission Leader' at driedger@usgs.gov, and Cc'd. to the ‘Secretary’ at c.fearnley@ucl.ac.uk. Please make sure you have received an acknowledgement email of your nomination and of your later proposal.

Background: 

To date there have been nine “Cities on Volcanoes” conferences. The purpose of these conferences is to bring together volcanologists, city authorities, sociologists, psychologists, emergency managers, economists and city planners to evaluate volcanic crises preparedness and management in cities and densely populated areas. 

Previous conferences: 

In 1995 the “Volcanoes in Towns” meeting was held in Rome, Italy. From that developed the first “Cities on Volcanoes”, held in June-July 1998 in Rome and Naples, Italy with over 100 people attending. This was followed by the second in February 2001 in Auckland, New Zealand; the third in in July 2003 in Hilo, USA; the fourth in in January 2006 in Quito, Ecuador; the fifth in in November 2007 in Shimabara, Japan; the sixth in May 2010 in Tenerife, Spain; the seventh in November 2012 in Colima, Mexico; eighth in September 2014 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The ninth in November 2016 in Puerto Varas, Chile, and the tenth is planned for September 2-7, 2018 in Naples, Italy. 

Requirements:

• CoV conferences are required to have a core focus on the links between volcanoes and society - especially cities. Community and disaster/emergency management participants are to be actively encouraged to participate and supported where possible.
• “Cities on Volcanoes” conferences are to be evenly spaced between the IAVCEI General Assembly and IUGG meetings; they will continue to be held approximately every two years late in the year.
• Venues for “Cities on Volcanoes” conferences will change for each successive meeting.
• The venue for the 11th “Cities on Volcanoes” conference to be held in 2020 will be selected by the Executive Committee of the IAVCEI Cities and Volcanoes Commission.

Brief nominations for hosting this meeting will close on 4 May 2018, 5pm GMT

Formal written proposals arising from these nominations are to be submitted by 6 July 2018 5pm GMT and must outline briefly:

• Dates
• Venue for conference
• Locality (e.g. volcano characteristics, activity, exposed population, vulnerability, etc.)
• Transport and accommodation options for international attendees
• Strategy to focus on cities and on volcanic risk mitigation
• Session / programme ideas (e.g. session topics, plenary speakers, field trips)
• Arrangements for logistics and handling of these by the host country
• Potential sponsorship
• Preliminary estimates of the registration fees (including reduced fees for students, and potential reduced fees for emergency and disaster managers / practitioners, and local community members). 

The Commission Executive Committee will consider the proposals and may seek further details from the applicants. 

The venue will be decided by a formal vote of the Executive Committee.

The Commission will announce the next venue on 7 September 2018 at the Cities on Volcanoes 10 conference.

The Commission will assist the hosting country where possible but organisational and financial responsibility rests with the hosts. Please note that the winning proponents have to agree the financial plan and administrative organization with IAVCEI.

Background: To date there have been eight “Cities on Volcanoes” meetings. The Volcanic Ashfall Impacts Working Group 

was established in 2010 pursuing the following Themes:

1: More Effective Ashfall Warning Messages
2: Protocols for Ashfall Data Collection and Analysis
3: Checklist of Topics & Indicators to Collect Impact Data Following Eruptions
4: Ash Impacts Loss-damage Functions for Risk Calculations
5: Improve International Ashfall Impact/Preparedness Data -Image Repository - Communications

Volcanic ashfall continues to cause some of the most frequent, widespread, disruptive and costly effects from eruptions

PLEASE JOIN the group if you would like to actively work on any of these themes.

The working group arranges workshops to focus on specific activities under each of these themes.
It maintains a wiki and an email listserve for rapid discussion and the exchange of ideas.

Protocols for ash collection and analysis are an area of significant activity for the working group at present.

The group is currently also focussing on a revision and update of the volcanic ash impacts and preparedness web resource hosted by USGS at:

Journal of Applied Volcanology

The Cities and Volcanoes Commission is pleased to announce a new Springer open access journal.

The Journal of Applied Volcanology

Journal of Applied Volcanology is an international journal with a focus on multi-disciplinary applied research and the societal impacts related to active volcanism. The journal aims for rapid publication of research papers at a high scientific level.

Research topics covered by the journal include; understanding the impacts of volcanoes on communities, improving risk management and enhancing community mitigation, preparedness, response to and recovery from volcanic hazard events; development of analytical instruments and methods; new proxies and lab techniques; methods of observation; and tools and techniques for remote sensing.

The journal welcomes proposals for special issues reflecting the trends in volcanology and other related disciplines.
