Submarine and Emergent Volcanic Arcs and Associated Volcano-sedimentary Basins: Facies Models, Petrology, and Volcano-tectonics

Category: Workshop
Description: From website: This international workshop is intended for researchers and students interested in the architecture and processes of active and ancient submarine to emergent volcanic arcs and associated volcano-sedimentary basins. The workshop is organized around daily field excursions to visit well-exposed facies and structures of the area and to promote in-situ discussions of the processes involved in their formation. The workshop will be held in the Cabo de Gata area (Almeria, SE Spain), where Miocene volcanic arc rocks related to the internal zone of the Betic-Rif orogen are excellently exposed, including sections across virtually undeformed and continuous submarine to subaerial volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rock successions. Main topics are facies architecture, basin configuration, petrology, volcano-tectonics, growth and instability of volcanic edifices and re-sedimentation processes. Eruptive styles range from explosive to effusive and rock compositions cover the spectrum from basaltic andesite to rhyolite. Volcanoes were dominantly domes, both subaqueous and subaerial. The workshop will be held inside the Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Nijar, a protected area with a semi-arid climate that allows us to minimise transport time to the outcrops, most of which are on the shoreline.
