About the Group

Public Description

This group aims at defining the big ideas that are now being discussed and sharpened by volcanologists. What are the ideas that are currently driving our work? What ideas should people who are not volcanologists be aware of?

The definition of Big Ideas follows efforts that have been done for broader scientific disciplines, such as Earth Science. It may offer a way to broaden interest in volcanology and to bring people into the field. It also may help us at being broadly relevant and linked to other fields.

We started this project in a Graduate Volcanology Class during the fall of 2011. After that we offer the work of the class on a webpage (see below) as a starting point for comments by volcanologists, through the VHub and AGU/VGP web site.

Our goals: 1. Improve the definition of Big Ideas. 2. Learn to express and describe them better. 3. Explore the various uses of Big Ideas.
